'JAWS'

Leah Robinson

For Christmas I was given the 100 films bucket list as a present from my Mum, which was funny at the time because I gave her the exact same present! We decided to try and watch some separately and some together.

So I’ve finally had time to crack on and watch a few, and the first one I watched was ‘JAWS’.

I’m not sure why I chose this one? I saw it on the list and I thought ‘I haven’t seen it that for ages’, and I don’t regret it being my first choice at all.

‘JAWS’ is a classic, a traditional storyline with a strong beginning, a dramatic middle, and an ending which still terrifies me. I told Mum I watched it and even she said that she jumps at the same point, when the shark’s head comes up through the boat.

It’s worthy to be on that list, one of the first blockbuster movies out there that really captured audiences’ emotions in a lot of ways. You feel for the characters, because the film builds on the theme of family and loss, which is relatable for audiences, more so than a giant shark being blown to pieces because it ate a gas canister.

I’m not implying that shark attacks aren’t an important theme, they’re unfortunately a regular occurrence, however ‘JAWS’ exaggerates regular shark attacks with the ultimate one, and it is terrifying. Since ‘JAWS’ we’ve had so many shark films going above and beyond, I think the craziest one to date is ‘Sharknado’, and we can all agree it’s definitely out there.

So, a solid start to the 100 movies bucket list, a classic I’ve seen before, therefore some comfort ground to start with. Now, I just want to leave you with this thought…

Is the shark called ‘JAWS’?
